What ERO found

The Education Review Office’s latest report on the school is a Te Ara Huarau School Profile Report from December 2023. This kind of report sets out what ERO and the school will evaluate together, here how well progress and achievement information is used in Years 9 and 10 to support fair and strong outcomes for every student.

ERO pointed to leaders committed to building teaching capability through a professional learning community, well-established systems for tracking and supporting senior students through NCEA, and supportive, respectful relationships that encourage students to take charge of their learning.

Next, the school plans to set up systems to track and report junior students’ progress so those needing extra help are identified, define the key progress measures in every junior subject, build teachers’ skill in using data and assessment, and agree a shared understanding of responsive teaching with high expectations. It also expects better attendance and engagement and faster progress for the students it is targeting.

Enrolling

Students who live in the home zone have the right to enrol, and proof of address may be needed. Out-of-zone places are offered under the school’s enrolment scheme, by ballot when there are more applicants than places.

The school says the board sets the number of out-of-zone places each year and advertises it, with how to apply, in a newspaper notice, and ballot dates are announced the same way.

Families complete an application form and bring it, with the student’s latest school report and birth certificate, to an enrolment interview. Home-zone students who meet the criteria for the ORS department are enrolled ahead of out-of-zone applicants.
