Haumoana is a coastal suburb in Hastings District, set on the Hawke Bay shore just south of the Tukituki River outlet. Hastings District Council describes it, with Te Awanga, as a seaside village with a local art scene and a gateway to Cape Kidnappers, Te Kauwae-a-Māui.
The settlement grew as a holiday place beside a gravel beach, and many people who live here travel to Hastings or Napier for work.
Clifton Road runs along the beachfront, with the land behind it flat and low-lying. Surfers come when large easterly swells move into the bay, and walkers use the riverbank paths near Haumoana Grange Domain. Low-lying streets can flood when high seas push water into the lagoon, so coastal conditions are part of everyday life here.

About Haumoana
The New Zealand Ministry for Culture and Heritage gives Haumoana the translation “sea breeze”. The name fits a village that faces the open bay, with the river mouth to the north and the coast road running south toward the cliffs of Cape Kidnappers. Hastings District Council uses the paired name Haumoana me Te Awanga for this stretch of shore.
The village developed as a holiday settlement. The surrounding land was long used for sheep and cattle grazing and for horticulture. Lifestyle blocks and grape growing have become more prominent, and the suburb now mixes permanent homes with the older bach character of a Cape Coast settlement.
A school, a hall, a fire station, a church and a small row of shops give it the services of a village rather than a resort strip.
The ground is flat and low, built on material laid down by rivers and the sea. Nearer the beach the soils are free-draining sandy gravels. Further inland, silt and clay sit over the gravels and drain more slowly. That setting explains both the easy coastal walks and the flood risk when the sea, the tide and the lagoon rise together.
Drinking water is a reticulated supply managed by Hastings District Council. A new source and treatment plant for Haumoana, Te Awanga and Parkhill takes water from a bore on Palomino Road, disinfects it with ultraviolet light, chlorinates it, and stores it in a 600,000 litre tank for a local pipe network of about 25 kilometres. Matahiwi Marae took part in the blessing of that plant.
Getting Around
Most people reach Haumoana by car. Clifton Road is the beachfront spine, meeting East Road and Beach Road at the corner known locally as Cape View Corner, beside the suburban shops.
Domain Road and Grange Road lead to the open space near the Tukituki River mouth. From Hastings or Napier the drive is across the Heretaunga Plains on local roads, not a state highway through the village itself.
There is no train and no ferry. A scheduled public bus serving the suburb was not confirmed from council sources, so plan to drive or arrange a lift. Haumoana School runs a school bus for its own pupils, including a run toward Te Awanga, but that is not a public service.
Day-to-day shopping is local. The Clifton Road shops, in the Haumoana-Te Awanga suburban commercial area, cover groceries and everyday needs. Larger supermarkets and services are a short drive away in Hastings, Havelock North or Napier.
The Coast and Reserves
Haumoana Grange Domain is a beachfront reserve near the Tukituki River mouth, with picnic tables, public toilets, and walkways and cycleways along the riverbank. Entrances are off Domain Road and Grange Road. Overnight camping in self-contained vehicles is permitted.
Hastings District Council also describes a beachfront reserve on Clifton Road as the most popular and largest of its overnight camping reserves on this coast. Check the council pages for conditions before you stay.
Haumoana Memorial Park sits in the village, with entrances off Pederson Road and Memorial Park Avenue. It is home to Haumoana Memorial Hall and has courts and fields used for tennis, basketball, netball, pickleball, cricket and junior football, plus a picnic table, public toilets and a playground. Both reserves are managed under the Cape Coast Reserves Management Plan, which covers reserves along Clifton, Te Awanga and Haumoana and deals with erosion, access, parking, native planting and recreation.
The beach itself is a gravel shore. Council notes that the coast is popular with surfers when large easterly swells move into the bay. This page is about the suburb, not a surf or swim guide. Conditions change quickly, and the same swell that makes a wave can also overtop the beach crest.
Coastal Hazards
Parts of the Haumoana shore have a long record of erosion, and beachfront properties have been inundated in heavy swells and high tides. Low-lying streets nearer the lagoon are a separate risk.
When sea swell, a high tide and rain raise lagoon levels faster than the pumps can clear them, water can move into streets and homes. Hastings District Council and Hawke’s Bay Civil Defence have issued precautionary evacuations for those streets, using Haumoana School as a shelter.
There is no seawall along the lagoon edge that failed in those events. Council has been clear that the sea was overtopping natural dune and land formations, and that Hawke’s Bay Regional Council works on the gravel beach crest and pump stations when that happens.
If you live here, or you are staying overnight, keep a grab bag ready, know a route inland, and follow Civil Defence advice rather than driving or walking through floodwater.
