What ERO found
The Education Review Office’s latest report on the school is a School Evaluation Report from December 2024, written after a new tumuaki and leadership team began in 2023 and the school moved following Cyclone Gabrielle.
ERO found that most students do well in the senior school, where NCEA achievement has stayed high over time across Levels 1 to 3, and that students report positive wellbeing and are settling into their new surroundings. However, early data shows most Year 9 and 10 students are not yet at expected curriculum levels in literacy and mathematics, attendance is below the Ministry’s targets for regular attendance, and more external moderation of NCEA work is needed.
ERO noted that leaders are beginning to plan the curriculum, set expectations for teaching and track progress, that learning support is in place for students who need to catch up, and that the board is meeting its legal requirements.
The agreed next steps are to embed assessment for learning and grow staff skill in using data, keep strengthening work on attendance, build staff capability and a shared understanding of evaluation, and develop a local curriculum that covers the breadth of The New Zealand Curriculum and fits the school’s special character, with progress, achievement, wellbeing and attendance data reported to the board regularly.

Enrolling
Families complete an online pre-enrolment application and an enrolment criteria form, and provide the student’s birth certificate and latest school report. They may then be invited to an interview covering the curriculum, the school’s special character and shared expectations, with fees explained and a uniform fitting on the day.
Families of boarders also confirm that they have read the hostel handbook and agree to its policies.
