What ERO found

The Education Review Office’s latest report on the school is a Te Ara Huarau School Profile Report from April 2023. This kind of report sets out what ERO and the school will evaluate together, here how well the Flaxmere Way, the school’s culturally responsive and relational approach to teaching, is lifting outcomes fairly for students.

The school chose this focus because achievement and equity need lifting and attendance, engagement and retention remain priorities. ERO pointed to leaders who keep planning for improvement and fair outcomes, growing staff capability in te ao Māori and te reo Māori, the Flaxmere Way underpinning teaching, and sound systems for tracking attendance, engagement, retention and achievement.

From here the school plans to grow leadership across its staff to embed the Flaxmere Way in a local curriculum, work with whānau, hapū and iwi so their aspirations shape that curriculum, and focus professional learning on students with diverse learning needs.

ERO’s report also notes that the school is home to a teen parent unit, a satellite class of Kowhai Special School and a Services Academy.
