What ERO found

The Education Review Office’s latest report on the school is an iwi evaluation report from November 2024, written in te reo Māori and English as part of Tiro Maroro, a pilot in which ERO and Ngāti Kahungunu evaluate schools using a kaupapa Māori approach.

ERO found that te reo Māori is woven through daily life at the kura, that the curriculum helps taiohi explore te ao Māori and the mātauranga of Ngāti Kahungunu and their own iwi, and that students are growing in confidence to take part in and lead marae protocols.

Learning programmes are shaped around the aspirations of each student and their whānau, engagement is high, and hauora support helps remove barriers to learning.

ERO also reported that attendance, achievement and progress were badly disrupted by Cyclone Gabrielle across 2023 and 2024. Less than half of students gained NCEA Level 1, a small majority gained Level 2 and a large majority gained Level 3, results have moved up and down over time, junior achievement information is not yet collected consistently, and attendance is below Ministry of Education targets.

The agreed priorities are a progression programme for te reo Māori o Ngāti Kahungunu, better use of assessment in reading, writing and mathematics, stronger teacher knowledge of how to teach literacy and mathematics, and regular reporting of attendance and achievement to the board.
