What ERO found
The Education Review Office’s latest report on the school is a report from November 2024, an iwi evaluation carried out with Ngāti Kahungunu as part of the Tiro Maroro pilot, which judges the school against the iwi’s own measures of success.
ERO found that te reo Māori, tikanga and Ngāti Kahungunu knowledge are woven through school life, that students are keen learners with a strong sense of belonging, and that Samoan and Tongan students learn in their heritage languages as well as English.
Hauora is well resourced, with wrap-around support for students and whānau. In reading, writing and maths, less than half of students were at the expected level after Cyclone Gabrielle disrupted attendance and learning, though phonics and structured literacy were speeding up progress, especially in reading. Attendance had improved a lot but was still below Ministry of Education targets.
The agreed priorities are to help students understand their own learning needs and next steps, support whānau to take part in planning their children’s learning and help at home, build teachers’ skill in using assessment and evaluation to lift reading, writing and maths, report attendance to the board regularly, and grow staff ability to teach te reo o Ngāti Kahungunu so students have more chances for immersion learning.
