What ERO found

The Education Review Office’s latest report on the school is a School Evaluation Report from September 2024. ERO noted that the school is home to a Ko Taku Reo Deaf Hub serving deaf and hard-of-hearing students across Hawke’s Bay, and found an inclusive culture in which children needing extra help are identified and well supported, helped by New Zealand Sign Language being used more widely in the school community.

Classrooms are orderly and positive, structured literacy is taught across the school, and professional learning in literacy and maths is making teaching more consistent. However, ERO found that less than half of students reach the expected curriculum level in reading, writing and maths, and that boys, Māori and Pacific students need fairer results.

School data shows that by the time students leave in Year 6, most reach the expected level in reading and just over half in writing and maths, though ERO said this data needs to be more dependable. Attendance is also below the Ministry of Education’s target.

ERO’s priorities are for the school to lift attendance and achievement in reading, writing and maths with fairer outcomes for boys, Māori and Pacific students, build a clear and coherent school curriculum, help teachers gather reliable achievement data and use it to target their teaching, and seek students’ views on their wellbeing.

ERO also recommended that the Ministry of Education give the school tailored support with teaching capability, attendance and its systems for tracking progress.

For a five-year-old, families bring a birth certificate and an immunisation certificate or Plunket book, and families from overseas also need proof of immigration status. A printable enrolment form is on the school’s enrolment page, and uniforms are sold at the school office.
