What ERO found

The Education Review Office’s latest report on the school is a Te Ara Huarau School Profile Report from July 2023. This kind of report sets out what ERO and the school will evaluate together, here how far the school’s own effective teaching framework is in place across the curriculum and lifting results for all students, particularly those it has targeted for support.

ERO noted that the school’s special character shapes every part of school life, that staff are committed to its vision and values, that positive relationships help students feel they belong, and that the school takes an active part in the Lower North Island Christian Kāhui Ako.

From here the school plans to make sure every staff member understands the purpose of the teaching framework, bring in a professional growth cycle that helps teachers reflect on what and how they teach so they can respond better to each student, and keep shaping a curriculum that works for every learner. It also aims to strengthen reading, writing and mathematics.

Enrolling

Hastings Christian School is state-integrated and serves families committed to the Christian faith. Its enrolment scheme gives first priority to members of the Hawke’s Bay Christian School Association, the school’s proprietor, then to other families with a connection to its special character, with a limited number of non-preference places after that.

Within each group, families living in the Hastings and Napier districts come first and places go by date of application, and the school keeps a waiting list.

Applications are considered by the Board of Proprietors, which normally interviews families about how their beliefs fit the school’s Statement of Beliefs, and this can take several weeks. Attendance dues are paid to the Hawke’s Bay Christian School Association. The school publishes its application closing date and current fees on its admissions page.
