What ERO found

The Education Review Office’s latest report on the kura is a report from June 2022, written in te reo Māori and English by ERO’s Māori review services in a joint kaupapa Māori evaluation with Te Rūnanga Nui o Ngā Kura Kaupapa Māori o Aotearoa, Te Kōhanga Reo National Trust and NZQA, covering the kura part of the whānau’s education pathway.

ERO found that students show strong leadership and confidence, and are growing as capable speakers and writers of te reo Māori with a feel for the reo and tikanga of Ngāti Kahungunu.

Waiata, mōteatea and haka from Tākitimu are used for teaching, students take formal roles at pōwhiri, and kapa haka has taken them to the national Mana Kura Tahi stage. Teachers track progress closely and adapt programmes to each learner, whānau are closely involved, and self-review draws on a wide range of information.

ERO looked at the kura’s systems for student safety, staff appointments, teacher registration, attendance and related policies, and the report sets out no compliance actions. Its recommendations were for the whānau to keep up their thorough internal evaluation with an eye on ongoing improvement, and to work together on the legacy and aspirations handed down by their tūpuna.
