About Elsthorpe Scenic Reserve Loop Track

Elsthorpe Scenic Reserve covers 35 ha in two separate blocks of mature lowland native forest. The canopy is mainly mataī, kahikatea, tawa and tītoki, with a regenerating understorey of small-leaved shrubs.

The loop crosses a boardwalk bridge and winds through the podocarp forest, giving a close view of the trees. Tūī, bellbirds, kererū and other common native birds live in the bush.

Only the Kairakau Road block has a track; DOC notes there is no track through the Elsthorpe Road section of the reserve.

DOC is running ongoing weed control to help the native forest regenerate, targeting species such as hawthorn, privet and plum.
